Why Wedge Loft Checks Run Shorter Here

Forty rounds, not seventy. The wedge line on every ledger card runs on a shorter interval than irons do, and the reason lives in what is underneath the turf rather than on top of it.

A wedge loses effective loft two ways. The angle itself can bend, the same slow drift that affects every iron head. And separately, the grooves and leading edge wear down through abrasive contact, which quietly reduces spin long before the stamped loft number on the sole changes by anything a lie machine would flag. It is the second kind of wear that runs faster here than the standard interval most manufacturers publish, and grooves are what we actually measure to set the number.

What Is Under the Turf Matters More Than the Turf

Most published wedge maintenance intervals assume fairway and rough over a reasonably forgiving soil base — loam or clay with enough moisture retention that a sole and leading edge glide through contact more than they scrape through it. Inland Northwest courses sit over thinner topsoil and, through the dry stretch from June into September, a hardpan base that is close to the surface on a lot of holes. The turf on top can look perfectly normal. What the leading edge actually meets a half inch down is closer to compacted dirt than to cushioned ground.

That difference concentrates abrasive wear specifically on the leading third of the face and the first two or three grooves nearest the bottom, which is exactly the zone that does the most work on a standard pitch or bunker shot.

Reading a Groove With a Feeler Gauge

We measure groove depth against a factory specification card kept for each major head line, using a feeler gauge run across the sharpest three grooves on the face. These figures are pulled from wedges that came back for a scheduled recheck, sorted by rounds played since the last visit.

Eighteen percent depth loss at forty rounds does not sound dramatic, but it lands right at the point where spin on a firm, thin lie starts dropping off in a way most golfers notice as inconsistency rather than as a groove problem. They chase it with technique changes before anyone thinks to check the face.

An iron only has to hold a stamped angle. A wedge has to hold an angle and a texture, and the texture goes first, on ground like ours, every time.

Why Forty and Not Seventy

The iron interval on the ledger card runs to seventy rounds because loft and lie drift is the dominant failure mode there, and that drift is comparatively slow. For a wedge, groove wear is the dominant failure mode, and it moves roughly twice as fast on firm, thin turf as published intervals generally assume. Forty rounds is where our own logged data shows a wedge starting to give back spin, and it is set there specifically because catching it at eighteen percent depth loss is a re-face or a fresh sole grind. Catching it at thirty-five percent, closer to what a seventy-round interval would allow, is usually a full replacement.

Sand wedges and gap wedges hit off firm bunker sand and tight fairway lies tend to run at the fast end of this table. A lob wedge used mostly for soft, high greenside shots can sometimes stretch closer to fifty rounds before it shows the same wear, which is why the recheck is a measurement rather than a fixed date regardless of which wedge it is.
